A free, on-demand scanner and a paid, real-time protection tool both fall under "security software," which leads a lot of people to assume the free version is just a slightly limited version of the same protection. The actual gap is bigger than that, and worth understanding clearly.
What on-demand scanning covers
An on-demand scanner checks your system for existing threats when you manually run it. It's reactive by nature: it finds and removes what's already there at the moment you scan, similar to a periodic checkup.
What real-time protection adds
Real-time protection monitors continuously, aiming to catch and block a threat as it's downloaded, opened, or executed — before it has a chance to do damage, rather than after. This proactive layer is generally what's missing from an on-demand-only setup.
The gap in practice
Imagine downloading a malicious file. With only on-demand scanning, that file could sit on your system, potentially even run and cause damage, until your next manual scan happens to catch it. With real-time protection, the threat is generally flagged at the moment of download or execution, before it gets that chance.
So is the free tier useless?
Not necessarily — it depends on your setup. If you already have solid real-time protection from another primary antivirus, a free on-demand scanner can still be useful as an occasional second opinion. But relying on an on-demand-only scanner as your sole protection, with nothing running continuously, generally leaves a meaningful gap.
The free tier isn't "worse security" so much as it's a different tool for a different job — periodic checkup versus continuous guard.
